Currently, the spray operation is widely used in industry, especially the automotive industry. As to the automotive wheel spray, the job is done by the workers manually in lots of domestic SMEs, which shows a low degree of automation. This not only affects the spray quality, but also greatly affects the health of the workers. Thus, it is of great importance to develop a low-cost automatic wheel spray production system, with the development of automotive industry and industrial technology, combined with China’s national condition.This paper is based on the case of SUMEC Wheel Co., Ltd. On the basis of a full investigation of the company, system requirements are proposed. The paper then developed a simple spray production system which can spray the surface of the wheel automatically. With the control of PLC, using simple and low-cost mechanical structure, the system achieved a continuous automatic spray on the upper surface and the side surface of the car wheel in two different directions.To R&D the spray production system, the following work has been done. First, we carefully analyzed the current status of the spray, simplified the workers’spray action reasonably, and proposed overall system requirements and overall program; Second, according to the wheel spray action and requirements, mechanical part of the system has been designed detailed, including chain drive sprockets, roller slide mechanism, the spray gun mount bracket and the overall rack; Third, a detailed design of the control system has been given, including the design of the control program, the selection of the hardware system, and the writer of the software programs.In the view of system cost and reliability, we developed the smart wheel spray production system which can replace the worker to spray car wheels continuous and automatically. The system improved the spray quality and level of automation, also the health of workers. The system also provides a useful way for other SMEs to improve automatic spray technology.
