This paper studies a technology to reduce muzzle velocity to achieve variable power launching using the principle of reducing the pressure in bore by venting part propellant gas. This technology can be used to control the terminal energy to achieve non-lethal killing precisely, which has great significance in the anti-terror areas. The non-lethal injury threshold was identified from kinetic energy and specific kinetic energy based on the domestic and foreign research data. Through the exterior ballistics numerical solution on a riot gun, the non-lethal muzzle velocities at different distances of5-90m were gained. According to classic interior ballistics theory and gas dynamics, a mathematical model of the interior ballistics was established to describe the process of variable power launching. Based on this model, the computer program was edited, the process of the interior ballistics of variable power launching of a riot gun was simulated numerically. The influence rules of parameters, such as venting location, venting area, venting chamber volume, venting area on the gas chamber, upon the muzzle velocity and the chamber pressure under different conditions were studied. The numerical simulation results and the experimental results had good consistency. The ballistic solver software to simulate the interior ballistics process was developed using VB language. The results of this paper have great significance to the development of variable power weapons.
