With the rapid development of the industrial technology and the extensive application of power electronics devices, the power quality has become increasingly demanding. In the industrial and domestic electricity load, resistive and inductive load as the main load makes the grid produce reactive current leading to reactive power, which brings extra burden to the grid and affects the quality of power supply. Therefore, reactive power compensation has become one of the main ways to ensure the grid good operation. Installing shunt capacitors near reactive load can reduce the reactive power flow in the power network, so as to reduce the loss because of conveying reactive power in the transmission line and the capacity of electrical equipment, which improves the power factor of supply line and steadying the voltage of the power system.Providing reactive power to the inductive load improves power quality in the low-voltage power supply system. Considering the electricity market actualities of requirements at home and implementation of conditions and economic practicality, the controller adopts the electric parameters measurement chip(ATT7026A) used for grid data sampling and uses single chip microcomputer(STC12C5A60S2) as the control core, and uses the thyristor to control capacitor, which makes the switching of capacitor more quickly,no arc and no impact. The controller has excellent performance, and improves the power factor and power quality. This paper introduces the purpose and significance of reactive power compensation and expounds the present situation and development trend of it at home and abroad. By researching the basic principle, compensation method and analyzing the system functions and design ideas, this article introduces the hardware and software modules and processes of a low voltage reactive power control system.
