1Objective:The objective of this study is to observe the clinical efficacy and the duration of the treatment called acupuncture plus moxibustion above ginger on the point Dazhui(DU14), and to optimize the project of acupuncture and moxibustion for allergic rhinitis(short for AR).2methods:40cases AR patients are from the acupuncture and moxibustion department of Guang’anmen Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, their age were between:18-65;all patients were treated by acupuncture plus moxibustion above ginger on the acpoint Dazhui(DU14) for12times in all for4weeks, and all patients had the entire records before and after the treatments.40patients were followed up by telephone and subsequent visit for one year. Patients were called or visited at four different times which were3months,6months,9months,12months after the treatment. Patients were asked about the symptom scores, TNSS+TNNSS VAS scores, the drug using, and the classification and severity of AR.3Results:The study in patients with persistent AR shows:After acupuncture treatment, The symptom scores of persistent AR patients evaluated at the follow-up points were less than the scores before the treatment(P<0.01), the lowest symptom score occurs in3months after treatment; The TNSS and TNNSS scores of persistent AR patients evaluated at the follow-up points were less than the scores before the treatment(P<0.01), and the lowest score occured after the treatment, scores of3months after treatment and after treatment showed no difference(P>0.05);After acupuncture treatment, The scores of Nasal congestion and nasal discharge evaluated at the follow-up points were less than the scores before the treatment(P<0.01), the lowest score occured in3months after treatment. Symptom of sneezing and nasal itching only was improved in3months after treatment (P<0.05);the best improvement in drug using occured in the3months after treatment, There are37.83%of the patients or reduce medication type or dosage reduction or decrease the frequency. All this showed that the effect of acupuncture therapy in the persistent AR can sustain for a year. The best effect can be maintained for three months, after acupunture treatment,The nasalsymptoms were all improved, especially Nasal congestion and nasal discharge were improved significantly, and the effect sustain for one year. The best effect can be maintained for three months too.The study in patients with intermittent AR shows:in follow-up attack period. there was a significant improvement in rhinitis symptoms and TNSS than before treatment (P<0.01). in follow-up attack period. there was no obvious improvement in TNNSS than before treatment (P>0.05),This therapy can improve53%of patients in using medication in follow-up period. The study on severity of AR in these patients show: There are22patients were from severe to mild of AR at one year after treatment. The study on classification of AR in these patients show: There were four persistent AR patients turn into intermittent AR, there was one intermittent AR patient hadn’t recurred in the period of follow-up, meanwhile five intermittent AR patients hadn’t recurred in previous fixed period.4Conclusion:The efficacy of acupuncture plus moxibustion above ginger on the point Dazhui(DU14) for AR can sustain for one year, the best effect can be maintained for three months; The therapy can improve nasal symptoms in intermittent AR patients in follow-up attack period;the therapy had a stable and lasting efficacy for Nasal congestion and nasal discharge, the efficacy can sustain for one year, the best effect can be maintained for three months;the therapy can reduce continuous inflammation in mild AR, and can effectively control moderate-severe AR patients condition, the therapy can improve the situation of patient’s drug using.
