AIM: To investigate the expression of glutathione peroxidase3(GPX3) in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma and its clinical significance.METHODS:42cases with esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia,86cases with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma were selected for GPX3detection by immunohistochemistry (IHC), and37cases with normal esophageal mucosa served as control.RESULTS:The expression of GPX3in normal esophageal mucosa (75.7%) were significantly higher than that in esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia (38.1%) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (18.6%)(P<0.01). Moreover, the expression of GPX3in esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia were much higher than that in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (P<0.05). The expression of GPX3in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma without lymph node metastasis(30.8%) were statistically higher than those with lymph node metastasis (8.5%)(P<0.01).CONCLUSION: The expression of GPX3in esophageal intraepithelial neoplasia, esophageal squamous cell carcinomas were significantly lower than normal esophageal mucosa, and the lower expression of GPX3were associated with lymph node metastasis. GPX3could be regarded as a candidate marker of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.
