It is obvious to all that Gérard Genette, as an important scholar studying Westerntheory of text, has made great contributions on it, and studying Genette’s theory oftext is also an important subject of academic significance. However, for a long timemany scholars just study Genette in two separate aspects in China: one is narrativetheory, and the other is intertextual theory. The reason is that these researchers havenot found the substantial consistency of Genette’s narrative theory and his intertextualtheory. In fact, the final theoretical end-result of both of them is the study on theory oftext, and it can also be said that it is based on the strong point of studying narratologyand intertextuality that the mansion of Genette’s theory of text is constructed. Thisessay aims to try unifying Genette as a narrative theorist and Genette as anintertextual theorist on the theoretical level of text, by studying which to reveal howGenette logically goes from narrative theory to intertextual theory. This essay is divided into four chapters. Chapter1is about Genette in theevolution of Western theory of text, which studies the contribution and the creativedevelopment of Genette’s theory of text from two angles:"outline of Western theoryof text " and "Genette and Western theory of text ". In chapter two, Genette’s narrativetheory of text is studied from the three aspects of "narrative and discourse","languagemodel" and "text-level theory". The third chapter of this study will explain Genette’sintertextual theory of text from the following three aspects:"generalized text andtranstext theory","paratext and metatext theory" and "hypertext theory". Chapter4will demonstrate the deconstruction tendencies of Western theory of text emergingafter Genette, by introducing the following representatives: Harold Bloom, Derrida,Germany Man and J. Hillis Miller. All in all, as a master of Western theory of text, Genette makes greatcontributions to its development and deepening, and he enables Western theory of textto be more operational and practical on analyzing a specific text. But in the process ofhis theory construction, Genette’s stressing on text study’s objectivity and ignoringtext content’s humanities leaves his theory of text a deep technical trace.
