East-West Cultural Exchanges Among The Blue And White Porcelain

This article take the blue and white wares as the subject of study,analyzing the impact that the porcelain has on the western culture in the communication of the oriental and occidental culture. It is discussed from three aspects:the eastern and western linguistic,chromatology, and eastern and western art.From the aspect of linguistic,the word "China" in the western language means both "China" and "chinaware",while the technical term of "china" is "porcelain",which is coincident to the pronunciation of Chinese "Bo Si Lan". Also "kaolin" is transliterated by "Gao Ling". Thus it can be seen that western language was influenced by blue and white chinaware,then generated new foreign terms. And at the same time Chinese words were enriched in the communication of culture.From the aspect of chromatology,I try to find out the reason why blue and white porcelain is pursued by the west,through stating the oriental and occidental attitude to color blue,analyzing the quality of blue scientifically and the conception "with me in" which the porcelain pattern reflects.From the aspect of culture interchange,I explain that the export of blue and white porcelain has influence on western culture,according to the chronological order of maritime trade between China and western countries from15th century to19th century,through western fresco painting,oil painting,architecture,cloths,life style and so on.Blue and white porcelain,is the historical evidence of our national culture,the cultural informations hided behind turn to be clearer and clearer by researching it. It is a key to internal which reflects the reasons of our national appearance of history and aesthetic culture; a bridge to external,the bond of culture interchange. Take blue and white wares for example,it shows the differences and similarities of aesthetic attitude and perspective of appreciation when people from different cultural background of east and west world treat art. Both the east and the west stand on their own situation of native culture,to absorb the factors that contribute to their own development of culture actively. That is to say,the effect of foreign culture play an active role in the development of culture. It is not only the reflection of enriching own culture,but also a kind of thinking method of attending to "other’s" wisdom. Porcelain wares is oriental cultural art,the representative of splendid Chinese craft works. All over the world when mentioning Chinese porcelain,the uppermost idea we think about is blue and white porcelain. And it is from blue and white porcelain that the western people first knew chinaware. The impact that the blue and white pattern put on the western culture far exceeds that of the wares themselves. And blue and white porcelain was the first kind of global goods,with high artistic quality. It improves the oriental and occidental culture to blend, to collide, thus to penetrate into each other,and to develop forward continually.
