With her unique characteristics, Ann Hui stands out of themale-director-dominated arena of Chinese movies. As one of the most influential filmdirectors in Hong Kong for almost30years, Ann Hui has directed nearly30films. Thetheme and style are changing, but the focus on human being is keeping, and thereality and the historical background is the constant concern of her film. She hasbeen granted with the Golden House Award in Taiwan and Hong Kong Film Award forseveral times, and has earned international fame as an excellent female director.Ann Hui immersed in the representation of reality. Her films always explores thefate of the characters in the realism. Based on her fifteen films excluding the ghostand martial arts films, with realism as the breakthrough point, this thesis tapped thespiritual connotation of her films, and discussed how she used her unique filmlanguage to express her inner world and emotion.Based on the comprehensive review of Ann Hui’s career and film works, thisthesis summed up her different types of films. With the main female characters inher several works as the object, this thesis discussed the existence state of thefemale in reality from the three angles of consciousness, role and age. The femalecharacters in her films experienced from the tragic role into the independentindividual. Then we analyzed how Ann Hui expressed realism from the angle of movielanguage, and interpreted her movie language around the personalization andauthenticity. Finally we pointed out the evolution of the realistic style of Ann Hui’sfilm, which reflected her wise of complying with the situation, her deep attainmentsand concise narrative ability, and her outlook on life and values and thinking ability inthe face of reality.
