Contemporary Beijing Niujie Changes Of The Marriage Customs

Based on a case study of the Niujie Hui community of Beijing, this article has detailedly recorded the marriage custom and its development and change of this place since1980s, and then by unifying the related theories research, the analysis presents concrete factors of the development and change, and lastly, this article explained essential factors and external propelling force of this development and change, and carries on reconsidering to it.The full text mainly includes the following parts:The introduction chapter introduces the purpose and significance of this research, summarizes the present research condition on marriage of the Hui nationality at home and abroad. Based on which, it also proposes the material origin and methods of this research. All of these lays the foundations for further discussion.Chapter two introduces the basic condition and environment of the community and draws a conclusion on the origin of the marriage custom of Hui people in Niujie based on the feature of this community which has experienced the developing process from a relatively independent closeness temple place to a symbolic community open to Beijing, the Chinese Muslim religion and external Muslim religion. The basic essence of the Hui marriage custom constitutes by Islamism marriage system, but the marital ceremony process is similar with Han nationality.Chapter three elaborates the marriage custom of Niujie in chronological order. Before the founding of the PRC, the marriage custom stuck to the Muslim marriage rule. Even receiving the impact of Western culture in the end of the Qing dynasty, new decorum and traditional marriage custom still paralleled among people. In the collectivization age, the traditional marriage custom was revised and even interrupted, under the influence of policy, the custom cultivated the feature of "revolution". Since the reform and open policy, the traditional custom has begun to return and follow the trend in modern times.Chapter four describes a Hui wedding ceremony in detail as a participant. So we can unfolds the Niujie marriage custom’s appearance in modern times from the process to the detail.Chapter five analyzes the factors Niujie marriage custom’s changing, including the marital sovereignty, inter-ethnic marriages, mate selection scope, the matchmaker role, the marital payment, the wedding ceremony procedure content. Mainly involves the ceremony participant’s status role and ceremony motion, the change of marriage time and place to hold ceremony, wedding ceremony clothing, diet, utensil, thus presents one omni-directional culture symbolism.Finally, the article analyzes the reason of marriage custom changing and give consideration. Since the modern times, the changes of marriage custom of Niujie Hui nationality are results from the comprehensive effects of varied factors, mainly include:effects of economy and society, dual influences of Islamism and Han Nationality culture. Under the national protection nationality policy background in recent years, the Hui culture can adapt to the social development on its own unceasing adjusting, its nationality’s cultural color can surely be stressed continually, Niujie, the Hui community’s blueprint will absolutely be more splendid and brilliant in the future.
