My Concerts

This concert is my first and the most important concert in my life, so I’m making every effort to present a perfect and a best concert. This concert, moreover, is an examination and a presentation of my three-year graduate study of Chinese folk music at Central University for Nationalities.I would like to illustrate my design for the concert and the prospective receptions of it in three aspects:1. The content of the concert:To present the essence of Chinese folk music in a full range of scopes as well as my familiarity with all the scopes, my repertoire songs are selected from four categories, namely, local folk songs, Chinese opera and Chinese opera-style songs, newly created songs, and opera excerpts.2. The characteristics of my prepared songs and the how I relate to them: Four characteristics stand out, namely novelty, beauty, specialty and change, among which I paid special effort in the achieving the last one. I choose the songs that I love, the songs that are suitable for my voice and those that can display the sweet and ringing elements in my voice and avoid acoustic flaws."Novelty":This could be the first time for my instructors and fellow students to hear some songs like "Love You in the Next Life" from opera Ballad of the Grand Canal. There are also songs that are rarely performed in concerts, such as Korean folk song "Ulsan Girl" and the brand new version of "Puzzle Tune". These songs, hopefully, will make you feel refreshing."Beauty":I think a real artwork must give its viewers an aesthetic enjoyment. Everybody longs for beauty, so in my design of the concert "beauty" is a main theme. I hope the lyrics, melody and style of the songs will all impress the audience aesthetically, as well as my garments and head decorations."Specialty":For me the songs in my concert must have their specialty and own "personality" in respect of melody and style. The four categories I choose, namely local folk songs, Chinese opera and Chinese opera-style songs, newly created songs and opera excerpts, belong to four unique music areas. Under each category I choose three songs so altogether there are twelve songs and each song distinguishes itself as a special one:under folk song category I choose Northwestern, Southern, and minority groups’songs; under Chinese opera I choose Beijing Opera and Suzhou Pingtan and Yu Opera style songs. Besides, the newly created songs and the opera excerpts also have their own uniqueness."Change":Considering that performing a single style of songs throughout the one-hour concert will undoubtedly bore the audience, the songs I choose vary in style and regional features. Based on my voice quality, range and tone, I give a careful consideration to the songs:some are grand and direct in narrative, some are subtle and delicate, some are passionate and some are melancholy. Such choice shows depth and width, and what’s more, the performer’s flexibility and singing ability.At last, to make sure that the concert goes smoothly without any slips, after careful consideration I have sketched seven possible accidents in the concert and have designed the responsive measures to make sure that my graduate concert goes successful.
