The ethnic identity of Mo Jia (named so in the fact that the majority of its members take "Mo" as the family name) in Libo and Dushan area of Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture in Guizhou province, belongs to Bouyei nationality. Compared with other members in Bouyei, Mo Jia is are officially regarded as a part of Bouyei ethnic group, for the language they use differs considerably from what is shared by the main population of Bouyei people. Named as "Mo Jia" by local people of Han of other nationalities, the ethnic group call itself ’?ai33mak51","pu31mak55"in Bouyei language. The Mak language is the domain language of Mojia, whose users mainly distribute in Fangcun, Jialiang and Boyao in Libo area, and sparsely appear in the adjoining county such as Dushan and Nandan. Since Bouyei, Sui and Han ethnics also dwell in this area, their languages and dialects hence exert influences, to some degree, on the Mak language, particularly on its vocabulary system.This thesis, based on a field study of Mo’s family and its language in Libo area and a literature review of previous linguistic studies, attempts to accomplish a comprehensive research of the vocabulary system in the Mak language. In the overview part, relating researches, cultural context, and the characteristics of vocabulary in Mo’s language are presented. Further, the vocabulary in the Mak language is respectively compared with that of Bouyei, Sui and Libo’s dialect, to discover why the vocabulary of the Mak language changed over years and how it would be formed in the future. The thesis is composed by six parts:Part1:Introduction. Introduce the background and the objective of this research. Summarize important points in previous studies relating to the Mak language.Part2:Literature review on Mo Jia and its language. Study the ethnic distribution, population, culture and language of Bouyei ethnic in Libo area. Trace back the history of Mo Jia’s name and origin. Compare the relationship of Mo Jia and Jin Jia (Wu Jia) and their languages.Part3:Main body of the thesis. Thoroughly analyze the interaction of the Mak language and other ethic groups’ languages or dialects. Based on vocabulary materials and research data, compare the difference between the Mak language and the others, especially focusing on the borrowed words in Mak’s.Part4:Discussing in which way that language interaction, make a summary of the development in Mak’s vocabulary and a further analysis on the causes of its change, and ethnic identity and economic development contribute to the formation of Mak’s vocabulary.Part5:Conclusion. Summarize each part of the thesis. Discuss the insufficiency of the research on Mo’s language and depict the outlook of this academic topic.
