Short Stories In The Late Golgi Study

Maksim Gorky is one of the most important writers in the history of Russian and Soviet literature in the20th century. He is particularly world-renowned for his Autobiographical Trilogy and the novel The Mother. Short stories enjoy great significance in his works. During his entire life, he has produced more than230short stories. However, among all the short stories, only those written in the earlier period were paid enough attention to, while those produced in the middle and later periods were rarely studied. Therefore, this thesis tries to analyze the themes, artistic characteristics, and factors influencing his works in the middle and later periods by studying his four collections of short stories, including Through Russia, Russian Tales Stories of1922-1924Years, and Fragments from My Diary.After the defeat of the revolution in1905, Gorky realized that one of the significant causes of failure of this revolution was the performance of Russian workman class. Also, thousands years of history bred some ideas, prejudices, habits and so on. All of those combining with psychological weakness of national culture, has been slowed down the pace of national development. After the revolution of1917, in society it appeared a series of violent behaviors that hurt culture badly. Gorky thought that at that period, all the weakness of Russian cultural mentality exposed.These two revolutions strengthen his convictions of researching Russian national character. Since1905, inheriting Chekhov’s criticism of civilians’ cultural psychology and Shchedrin’s sarcastic tradition and on the basis of himself experience, Gorky created such several short stories.In these works, Gorky applied realism, using "I" this image to tell "extremely dislike stories". His works embodied the ignorance, savage and anti-culture of Russian people, these so called national characters exactly right to explain the reason why them slow down the pace of Russian history. Gorky’s works are to appeal people to face life and improve their own culture literacy.
