This article based on the evolvement and analysis of the countryside prose concept and the local prose concept which combined with the characteristics of local prose since1990s, to limit the local prose meaning in broad sense, thought that the local prose was:Writers describe the country life and local culture in a natural or cultural aesthetic perspective based on their local affection, with strong local flavor and local characteristics, show some local humanistic care and more profound connotation of regional cultural prose. This article has reviewed and classified the local prose since1990s, to generalize it’s characteristics as:Full of local emotion, has the life consciousness and the rational spirit, contains rich regional culture. This article mainly discussed three spirit characteristics which contained the nostalgia complex, psychomotor regression and life consciousness. Writers composed local prose because of the alien feeling of the city, they expressed their nostalgic and sentimental attachment by writing rural life and childhood memories, sympathized for country people’s suffering, pondered over the lost of farming civilization, writers inspired by the spiritual ecological crisis of industrial civilization, made country as the ideal home and soul habitat by putting in spirit of mind and poetic imagination. Writers also called for the return to nature, building the ideal of human spiritual home by drawing a picture of the nature and human equality in symbiotic life. Writers expressed life experience and deliberated the predicament and significance of individual life, sought and explored vitality of the local world to send the ideal of human life forms and open the life consciousness. This local prose contains rich regional culture:Han Shagging, ye Men, Xie Zongyu displayed the Sentimental, mysterious and romantic Huxiang culture. Chi Zi jian, Susu showed the plain, profound, magical and magnificent northeast culture. Jia Pingwa, Zhou Tao, Zhang Chengzhi, Ma Lihua expressed the original, energetic, and gorgeous Western Frontier Culture. Wang Zengqi expressed the peaceful, soft and classic Jiangnan culture.
