The development of erhu as a solo instrument over a hundred year is accompanied by the formation of a repertoire, among which many were transcript or rearranged from vocal songs and instrumental pieces. While these pieces have largely enriched the repertoire of erhu, by studying the skills applied by the instruments for which these music pieces were originally created, the performance technique and the expression of erhu have also been significantly diversified and enhanced. Violin pieces account take the big part of the transcriptions, and they have inspired and propelled the performance of erhu to a great extend. This research intends to discuss thoroughly and extensively the relationship between violin skills and the five rhapsodies which were composed by Mr. Wang Jianmin associated erhu techniques in the late20th century. Given the similarities between the two, this research will further probe into the applications and positive influences that violin techniques provided over erhu techniques used in the performance of those rhapsodies in the late20th century.
