Chinese listening textbooks hold an important position in the teaching ofChinese listening courses which impact directly to the teaching programs.In Jakarta, universities commonly use Chinese Listening Course (Hu Bo, YangXuemei, Beijing Language and Culture University press) as their elementary Chineselistening textbook. Out of nine universities and colleges that offer listening courses,seven of them are using the Chinese Listening Course, one is using Chinese ListeningCourse (revision), and one of the university does not use any listening textbook fortheir courses.This paper analyzes Chinese listening textbook in Jakarta, and used ChineseListening Course as its primary source. By examining the textbook, we found that thecharacteristics of the textbook are explained below:-The type of the text is mainly from a single sentence and the short text-The main themes of the text is based on daily life-The exercise part are very pay attention in tones and rhythm exercise-The new words and the length of the text in all of the three volume areincreasing along with the progress of the students’ ability-The gap of difficulty level between each volume of the textbook is too high.On the other hand, this paper also examines Indonesian students’ opinions tothe Chinese listening class and textbook, which resulted in these:1. The motivationsof students learning Chinese is based on their interests in Chinese language.2. Themain difficulty in Chinese listening courses is the speed of the speaker3. Thestudents’ demand of the textbook content is based on daily life.4. The results of thesurvey are most of the students “like” Chinese listening class, more than half of thestudents think that Chinese listening class is “important”. But, the students think thatChinese listening class is tend to be “difficult”.The analysis of Chinese Listening Course and the survey of Indonesian studentsare associated with psychological mechanism of listening comprehension, the factorsthat affect the listening comprehension and the basic principal for compose teaching material for Chinese as a foreign language, in order to come forward withrecommendations in creating the Indonesian elementary level Chinese listeningtextbook.
