Social Differences In Chengdong District, Xining Hui Chinese Commonly Used Words

Hui Chinese is a special variant of Chinese with distinctive characteristics of ethnics and religions, mainly used by Hui nationality in mainland China. In all respects, Hui Chinese differs from the Chinese used by the Han and other ethnic groups, especially in vocabulary. The special Hui Chinese vocabulary includes Arabia, Persian loanwords, new words processed by Chinese morphemes, other Minority Languages’loanwords, etc. The Common Words, which are important components of both the special vocabulary and the common vocabulary of Hui Chinese, are frequently used by Hui nationality. Therefore, there are much more research value. The eastern area of Qinghai Province, Xining city, is the ghetto of Hui nationality, with high population density of Hui nationality, strong religious atmosphere, features the ideal survey points for the study of Hui Chinese and its usage.As the premise of literature review and foundation of clear classification, this study will summarize the main characteristics of the Common Words of Hui Chinese, and do the social linguistic research about the usage situation of the Common Words of Hui Chinese in the East District, Xining City.The results show, the Common Words of Hui Chinese feature four characteristics:it has considerable amounts of Arabia, Persian loanwords; religion-related words have shown secularization; interaction with the Han dialect and other minority languages in the same region; some of the Common Words of Hui Chinese has the super regional character. The differences in vocabulary between the Hui Chinese and the Chinese used by the Han and other ethnic groups, is firmly attached with the close contact between Chinese and the languages used by the ancestors of the Hui nationality during their language-converse period. While, the development of Islamic religious culture in China has provided the possibility for the long-term stability of the differences of the Hui Chinese vocabularyMeanwhile, subjects to the needs of expressing religious believes and ethnic identity of Subjects in language aspect, the usage situation of the Common Words of Hui Chinese is in good condition, performanced in high awareness rate, and the commely used rate has obvious polarization phenomenon. Communication occasions and communication object has certain influence on the usage situation of the Common Words of Hui Chinese.There was also a correlation between the usage situation of the Common Words of Hui Chinese and the various social factors of Subjects, including the distance between the Subjects’residence and the mosque, age, gender, education level and the religious activities. The usage situation of the Common Words of Hui Chinese in the East District, Xining City has shown some kind of recession, mainly affected by the national fusion, the popularizing of mandarin and the education Level.
