With two experiments, we examined the time course and activation of phonological activation of complex character and their phonetic radicals. In the first experiments, participants did a prime-naming task over the set of word pairs, the prime words may have their phonetic radicals on the left or on the right, the target words were phonological related with the prime words in one of three conditions:word homophonic, phonetic radical homophonic or phonologically unrelated. Three SOAs between the prime and target words (57ms,150ms and250ms) and the priming effect were manipulated to trace the time course of phonological activation. With the ERP technique, the second experiment used a phonological judgment task which used the similar material of word pairs. In the first experiments, It was found that, in irregular phonograms with left phonetic radical, the phonology of the complex characters were activated, but not for the phonology of the phonetic radicals; the ones with right phonetic radicals were different, both the phonology were activated, and the phonology of the radicals disappeared quickly; the phonology of the regular phonograms with left phonetic radical were stronger and earlier than the irregular ones; the phonology of the regular phonograms with right phonetic radical were weaker, but the regular and the irregular ones activated at the same time. In the second experiments, For the irregular phonograms with right phonetic radical, the word homophonic pairs elicited a larger P200than the phonetic radical homophonic pairs, moreover the latency of the regular ones were longer than the irregular ones, when the word pairs were phonologically unrelated. Any difference were not found in the phonograms with left phonetic radical. These results showed that, when the phonetic radical was on the left, the regular phonograms were found to be processed better than the irregular ones, however, when the phonetic radical was on the right, the result was quite opposite; For the irregular phonograms, when the phonetic radical was on the right, the phonology of the radical was better preserved.
