The Ramayana, one of the two great epics of India, has an important position in world literature. Ancient Indian people initially created this epic. Thus it has had a profound impact on Indian people’s life, thoughts, and culture. Gradually, it spread out to the nations and people in eastern and southern Asia. In the19th century, it was translated into English, French, Italian, Russian, Japanese and so forth. It was initially translated into Tibetan during the reign of King Khri srong lde btsan and it was the first translation of all. The great Chinese scholar Ji Xianlin also translated this epic into Chinese. In the fifth or sixth century BC, this epic was first developed in India. It depicts the struggles for power between and within nations. This epic reflects ancient Indian social conflicts, and tells the story that virtue would defeat evil, justice would defeat injustice, and kindness would defeat brutality. This epic also praises Rama for his kindness and virtue, and for being just, while simultaneously disparaging Ravana, King of Lanka, for his brutality. This thesis compares the Ramayana of Indian epic and the Ramayana Biography by celebrated Tibetan scholar Zhang Zhang chos dbang grags pa. Because the two authors were born at different times and places, they had different culture, thoughts, beliefs, and aesthetic values. Therefore, these two texts are very different in mundane perspective, relationship between lovers, characterization, and so forth. This thesis has three main parts, as well as an introduction and acknowledgment. The first part focuses on how the Ramayana was transmitted into Tibet and when; the second part discusses the Ramayana’s plot using a comparative analytical approach. The last part analyzes the Ramayana’s literary value and philosophical views both in India and Tibet, again using a comparative analytical approach. This demonstrates how India and Tibet had much contact and cultural exchange.
