"Ramayana" is known as "the first poem" and "the best poem" in India, and it is regarded as one of the most powerful and classical book in the epic period of ancient India. With considering "Ramayana",the "Lan GA Xi He" were created by those predecessors of Dai nationality in Yunnan,People's Republic of China.Although "Lan GA Xi He" is originated from "Ramayana",the description in "Lan GA Xi He" behaves differently from that in "Ramayana"."Lan GA Xi He" inherits the tradition of Dai literature and advocates the culture connotation of Dai nationality.Of importance is that, both "Ramayana" and "Lan GA Xi He" extolled the heroic beauty love, and portrayed several character images with highly authenticity and typicality.Comparison between these two epics has been one of long-standing topics, especially for the comparative research on character image. However,it remains un-comprehensive and un-specific at present on comparative research of character image. Therefore,we expect our works here to apply to further deepen the comparative investigation of character images on the basis of previous progresses and achievements. On the basis of cultural comparison perspective,we here have the organization of this work as follows:At first, the main character images of these two epics are summarized and classified. For example,we divide those main character images into type of semi-God and semi-human,type of semi-God and semi-demon,and type of semi-God and semi-animal.And then,we compare and analyze these three types of main character images based on the description of appearances, mental activities, and fates in"Ramayana" and "Lan GA Xi He".On the description of appearances:(1)for semi-God and semi-human type,"Ramayana" mainly reflects the meticulous carving of the"Luoya" poetic language in ancient India and the contradictory and unified aesthetic consciousness of Hinduism, whereas,"Lan GA Xi He" reflects the loose and free Zan HA tune and the unique aesthetic characteristics of "imagination and beauty" for Dai nationality;(2)for semi-God and semi-demon type,"Ramayana" has a funny and ugly description of the devil's appearance using a unique writing style, while,in "Lan GA Xi He",description for the appearance of Feng Ma Jia holds full of an appreciative emotional tendencies;(3)for semi-God and semi-animal type, relative to a simple description of the appearance of Anuman in "Lan GA Xi He","Ramayana" has a glittering description of the appearance of Hanuman. On the description of mental activities:(1)for direct description,"Ramayana" embodies a kind of aesthetic art of grief, whereas,"Lan GA Xi He" reflects a relatively gentle style;(2)for dreamland description, lots of colors are used in "Ramayana",which reflects the aesthetic characteristics of ancient India literature linking colors with psychological emotions, while "Lan GA Xi He" prefers to use symbolization and metaphor, embodying the unique creative thinking of Dai nationality;(3)for inner monologue,it is more stretched in description of Hanuman in "Ramayana" than that of Anuman in "Lan GA Xi He".In general, description of mental activities in "Ramayana" is much richer than that in"Lan GA Xi He".On the description of fates:influenced mainly by religion, characters in "Ramayana" seek the unity of the Brahma and themselves, for examples, the hero returns to the throne of deity and the heroine devotes herself into the mother of earth. However,in "Lan GA Xi He",besides the influences of religion, the social background and national psychology also affect the fate of characters, which usually leads to a reunion happy ending. Moreover, based on the integration and re-creation of literary culture, and standing on the point of similarity in historical stages and differences in cultural background,we here explore and analyze the similarities and differences of character images in two epics. Finally, inheritance and creation to "Ramayana"nowadays in China, such as the Cantonese opera "Ramayana",are discussed.
