It is rational to connect modernity of Chinese literature with literature in the May4th Movement. However, it will be not understood to make literature and arts in Yan’an be related to modernity, even anathema to some scholars, the reason of which is that most scholars are habituated to explain Chinese literature by the concept of Moderity in the west. They ignore its variability in China according to its real situation. In this thesis, the author presents what is Modernity of literature and arts in Yan’an from the view of writing theory and writing practice.As for the writing theory, The Speaking About Literature and Arts In Yan’an, as an important theoretical documents of writing practice, can be a milestone during Chinese literature theory development in the20th century. Owning to the intuitional interpretation of The Speaking About Literature And Arts In Yan’an about the political standards and the aim of arts creation which is to serve workers, peasants and soldiers, scholars of literature and art have deviation of the understanding of the spirit of The Speaking About Literature And Arts In Yanan.Referring to the above, in the first part of the thesis, the author, from the viewpoints of political standards and the aim of arts creation which is to serve workers, peasants and soldiers, introduces the concept of modernity about The Speaking About Literature and Arts In Yan’an. The author maintains that the issues of political standards and the aim of arts creation which is to serve workers, peasants and soldiers are rooted in the masses. The purpose of comrade Mao Zedong said that the aim of arts creation which is to serve workers, peasants and soldiers is to claim the issues of serving the masses and how to serve the masses which is the further thinking and exploration on the relation between literature and the masses that has aroused widespread concern but remain unresolved. So does the issue of political standards, which also focuses on the masses. Cann’t we connect such a spirit which treats the interests of the people as the basis with the concept of modernity?In the writing practice process of literature and arts in Yan’an, two literary genres have achieved great successes which are novel represented by Zhao Shuli, a local born and bred peasant writer and Ding Ling, an intellectual writer and drama represented by The White-haired Girl. Therefore, in the second part, the author presents three chapters to introduce the concept of mordernity of literature and arts in Yan’an from the points of writing practice.Enlightenment spirit is the concentrated reflection of Chinese cultrue and Chinese literature modernity, which is not only related to literature in the May4th Movement but exists in the literature and arts in Yan’an. In the1940s, writers like Zhao Shuli have great patriotism consciousness which is embodied in thire works. Therefore, literature and arts in Yan’an are the same as literature in the May4th Movement which is called enlightenment spirit. In second part, the author presents the concept of Zhao Shuli’s novels from the points of form and content of the enlightenment.In the third part of the thesis, the author shows the concept of the mordernity of Ding Ling’s novels from time sensebility and herawearness of women liberation.In the last part of the thesis, the author attempts to find the mordernity of drama-The White-haired Girl by its employing of civilian resources and connection with the factors in the west.
