The emerging of China’s nonâ€governmental contemporary art museums has become a significant cultural phenomenon nowadays. Several museums do survive after5years of their establishment and to some extent find their way out. How to achieve sustainable growth has become the key issue of these nonâ€governmental contemporary art museums. This thesis aims at providing several suggestions and solutions to the longâ€term and sustainable growth of these museums in China. Five China’s nonâ€governmental contemporary art museums that have survived their first five years are selected as the objects of study. The research goes through their transformation, missions, sources of funds, management structure, and academic development respectively inorder to figure out the advantages and disadvantages of these museums in terms of their sustainable growth. The research results in the conclusion that the sources of funds, management structure and academic development are major problems of these museums. The Museum of Modern Art in the U.S. can be the role model in terms of its important role of the board of trustees, professional management team, and various sources of funds (especially the endowment).Similarities and gaps in policies, economy, and charity status of China and the United States have made it easy to address the problems. China’s nonâ€governmental contemporary art museums do have a bright future, but need both their own efforts and the improvement of the external environment to achieve their goals and better implement their missions. |
