Painting is not only reproduces what people see simply, its exploration lies in showing t he world that people can’t see——the hearts and the spiritual world of men.2Before the emergence of impressionism, which called the origin of modern art, the valu e of representing art is widely recognized; But after World War Ⅱ, Western art no longer ac cepted a simple reproduction of representing art, and began to focus on the artist’s inner, emotional and subconscious world.These changes could be regarded as the process of Western art developed from ration ality to intuition, it could be also considered that artists began to use chance principles in t he field of painting. After the new realism in the1960s, chance principles were applied to modern art by many modern artists in the1970s. However, in the view of historical backgro und and scientific development, the application of this expression mode of chance is a nor mal, natural change inevitably. Recently, with a radical tendency that the abuse of this cha nee principle, it is viewed as a principle in the form of painting composition.Artwork is not intentional creation structure by artists, but the degradation of creation b ased on the sense modality. The creative works with the application of chance might be int eresting, improvisational and attractive, but they can’t get a deeper meaning on the artistic level.For example, a person wants to depict the sunset scene on the canvas, but he neither shows the sunset colors, nor applies the basic principles of composition to the painting. E ven if he argues that he likes this kind of painting and he paints so intentionally, others still think that the work is not created by the author’s real intention, it just is a naive product which deviated from the common sense.What’s more, even if the painting created by the chance principle makes people feel g ood, it is merely a product of chance, and it cannot represent the artists themselves. In ot her words, this kind of work has no meanings. Art is never a work that a lazy dreamer can engage in.Artists need to devote all our energies, passion and effort to artistic creation. On the s urface of it, created art is derived from the artist’s occasional inspiration, but in fact it is t he result of an artist who paid out for a long period of time, commitment and dedication. Artistic creation is an activity that needs our passion and energy. If only relying on subcons ciousness or chance passively, no achievement will be come true.At the beginning of the following thesis, I explained the chance concept, discussed the background of chance in art history, the works of artists and the expression mode of chan ce at that time. I also studied the advantages, disadvantages and limitations of chance pri nciple and try to identify the related theory of chance components in my creative activities.
