Materialized Thought

The spirituality and conceptuality of artistic creation have beenemphasized in contemporary art. As expressing ways, the using ofmaterials should base on thoughts. It sometimes shows as a trend that thematerials using in the creation of comprehensive material paintings breaksaway from the content that the artists wish to deliver, such as creating isjust for the material but not for the idea, in contemporary art of China. Idid the studies of classic cases both in Chinese and worldwide art historybefore reaching my conclusion by combining the daily thoughts withcreations during my postgraduate period. In my opinion, the key tocontemporary art is to transform the thoughts into the vision of an artwork, and the creation behavior should avoid making art works fail toshow the power of the thoughts but only control by the materials. So that,for one thing, the contemporary art must take history as a mirror,meanwhile we must do the research deeply of art history and tradition,and then we can understand the truth of cultural aspirations in today’sChina by studying the traditional context. For another, the creationbehavior should stay with the faith of tradition honestly. On this accountwe can build the bridge between the materials and ideas, the languagesand thoughts, and the form and content in our art practice. The creationbehavior should not apart from the theoretical thinking, at the same timewe can use the reference of the rational way of scientific exploration in thewest and the spirit of philosophy in the east, especially in Chinese tradition.Face the fact, and make the problem be solved.
