In ancient times, there is no necessary division between sketch from nature and landscape creation,"Art comes from Life, but also needs an artist’s inspiration and creation to make it a piece of art", which not only is the principle of sketch from nature in traditional Chinese culture, but also is the criteria of landscape creation. Ancient sketch from nature focuses on seeing with eyes and memorizing by heart. In another word, ancient artists try to memorize the landscape that they see, but not draw when they are on the scene. They tend to draw with subjective imagination, which is in great difference with contemporary artists. There are three main forms of contemporary landscape sketch, namely sketch to the view, shorthand sketch and sketch from memory. The shorthand sketch is abundantly adopted by Fu Baoshi, a contemporary Chinese landscape painting artists, and the sketch from memory is usually adopted by another Chinese landscape painter, Huang Binhong. As to the relationship between sketch from nature and landscape creation, what differs from ancient times is that sketch from nature owns comparatively greater independence. Sketch from nature is the basis of landscape creation collecting materials. At the same time, Sketch can be a major method to complete works on the scene.Contemporary artists have been focusing on sketch from nature since the founding of New China. And sketch, providing materials and ideas for theme creation, plays a basic role in the process of transferring to theme creation, which is a phenomenon worth further research.As is known to all, theme generally refers to the distinct central idea that appears in a piece of works and the artist’s mature artistic style is reflected in the works. The theme of landscape painting is not as distinctive as that of portraits, but it tends to express the emotional and aesthetic taste of the creators. When painter takes "landscape" as a theme, injects his individual thinking about society and life in the painting and modifies it with purposes, his work of art will be a creation with profound theme. Then what might be a problem in the transformation process from real sketch to thematic creation?In the thematic creation of the landscape, how to select a representative scene from the live sketch is an extremely important issue. Take "the Shaoshan group painting" of Fu Baoshi as an example, this thesis analyzes how he selects scenes in his creation. Mr Fu Baoshi adopts live sketch and draws a lot of small drafts, and he collects a lot of materials. Then he selects representative scenes from his small drafts according to the demand of the theme and drawing. Moreover, he adds subjective imagination to create the painting. Another example given here is "Fight in Northern Shanxi" by Shi Lu. This thesis mainly analyzes how to handle character in the scenario in thematic landscape creation process. Furthermore, the creating experience and feelings of the author of this thesis will be combined to describe and analyze the problems that encounter in the process from real painting to thematic creation. At last, the author of this thesis intends to propose several useful solutions to the problems mentioned above.
