"Karma Xian Yu Jing" And Mongolian Folk Tales

This dissertation researches the influence of The Wise and the Fool on Mongolianethic literature. For Mongolian folk tales, in addition to the influence of Indo-Tibetanstories, the effect of Buddhist stories is significant. The Wise and the Fool is a collection ofBuddist stories spreading among the western area and central Asia. The book ischaracterized by its complicated plots and wonderful imagination and it is easy to beunderstood. Included in Ganjior, the book was passed from Tibet to Dunhuang and wastranslated by Gush Qorji into Mongolian at the end of the sixteenth century and spread sofar. The book of name is translated as Ulgeriin Dalai with the meaning of “the ocean ofstories”. It gives the research on Shireet and the current-exsiting version. It shows that withthe comparison between Chinese version and Mongolian version, the travel section of theprince of good karma in Mongolian version The Prince of Good Karma Diving into Seadoes not match with the same story in Chinese version. After the survey on the similaritiesand differences of the text, it leads to the conclusion that the translation is from The Princeof Charity Diving into Sea which has been widely spread among Mongolian society. Thestories of two princes seeking treasure in sea and king`s dramatic judgement form atremendous impact on Mongolian folk literature.Mongolian people borrow some parts of Indo-Tibetan folk tales as the motifs of theirown stories and on such basis, they transform the former folk tales of other nations intonew stories in accordance with the Mongolian national awareness and habits. The processis an impact of the foreign folklore onto the Mongolian folk literature and the organiccombination of the two forms the manifestation towards the promotion and developmenton Mongolian folk literature. The integration has caused numbers of variations towardsMongolian folk stories from characters, plots, themes and connotations expressingMongolians’ deeper understanding and faith towards life. Therefore, on the way ofexploring the variations of those motifs, the Mongolian ethic speciality will be discovered.
