The Shitao Phenomenon that occurred during the1920s and1930s was an important phenomenon in art history. It is a period that is worth studying in relation to the research of the painting circle of Beijing during period of the Republic of China. Although the Shitao Phenomenon first appeared among Shanghai’s painters, it was the Beijing’s painters who incorporated their local styles and characteristics into their impression of Shitao Phenomenon. This dissertation starts with the changing position of Shitao in art history during the period of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of Republic of China. First, a background for the beginning of the popularity of Shitao Phenomenon in Beijing must be examined. From the end of Qing Dynasty and the beginning of Republic of China, the popularity of Shitao Style could be found among many areas such as publications, collections, theories and scholarly discourse. This phenomenon intensively describes how highly the artists praised and studied Shitao Style, especially its two aspects of learning from reality and respecting the individual characters. On the other side, the art circle has also realized the overuse of Shitao Style and the problems it caused. Some criticisms about the overflow of expressionism painting were followed.The previous phenomenon shows the growing trends of painting theories among the art circles in Beijing during Republic of China period, and the specific performance on different levels of theories. No matter how complex the performance of paint theory is, the fundamental is always related to the concepts of paint theories of the art circles in Beijing during period of the Republic of China. To some extent, it was also affected by the social circumstances and cultural psychology of that historical period. |
