The Nobel Prize for Literature in1938is an American female writer—Pearl S. Buck. Due to her several China-related novels which were based on her own experience, she won this prize. She is one of the earliest writers who contributes to the communication of the the western and eastern culture in the early twentieth century. She is the first American female writer to win the Nobel Prize and becomes famous in both home and abroad literature fields since then. People all over the world had a mixed reaction of Pearl S. Buck and her works, furthermore, the spreading of her works in China also faced many difficulties. In1930s when she got her Nobel Price, she was very famous in China. In the mean time, there were many criticisms at that time, especially criticisms by some famo us critics in China, like Lu Xun and Ba Jin. However, the research about Pearl S. Buck disappeared a fter the establishing of the new China. This female writer who grew up in China and wrote about China had been forgotten by people in China until1980s when people started to research Pearl S. Buck again.Compared Pearl S. Buck with other writers who described China, the biggest difference is her Chinese life experiences. So that she accepted both the American and Chinese culture, even though they are completely different. Even she was regarded China as her motherland in her childhood, but with the growth of age and experience, Pearl S. Buck shaken on the fate of cultural identity between American and Chinese culture, and began closing to her place of birth----the United States. Under the conflicts of bicultural, she would choose which part, why made such a choice is a matter to be discussed in this article.This article is mainly from three aspects to analyze how Pearl S. Buck acquired identity under the dual background of Chinese and Western culture. The first chapter surrounds three biographies which she wrote for her parents and herself, to reflect the changes of her mind; the second chapter analyzesthe influence on Pearl’s creation and thought development by her Chinese experience through thedynamics of China in hereyes; the last chapter illustrateshercogitation of Chinese culture under the background of dual cultures, and that she never gave up the cogitating and propagating of Chinese culture, though she went back to the field of Western mainstream culture eventually. The full text analyzes the how the author self-denied gradually in multiple world under the circumstance of Chinese and American cultural conflict and, and how she expressed her mind-changing in her works. By the appropriate combination of author’s literary works in different stages, the content of this article demonstrates her mental changing process and her value orientation towards cultural conflict. The conclusion part is an organic revelation of the contents in above threeaspects.In writer’s opinion, though the Pearl’s view on oriental China had considerably serious defects inevitably, her perspective of "bilateral tolerance" between Chinese and Western cultures from her work is affirmed.
