In the modern world, with the boom of economy, people’s desires swell up. At the same time, they have thrown "temperance" away. The lack of temperance brings out many problems in the relationship between people and others. In the period of social transformation, many new issues like officials abuses their power, over develop the environment or consume without temperance, have affected the normal, orderly development. Therefore, it means a lot in theory or in reality to research on "temperance and its contemporary value".The main meaning of temperance is that you control yourself in order to make your character remarkable.As a virtue, temperance featured selectivity, autokinesis and moderation. The value of temperance embodies the relationship between temperance and virtue education, the relationship between temperance and happiness, and the relationship between temperance and justice.In the contemporary, the unbalance of education objective, the single way of education and the misunderstanding or the rejection of virtue are the common performances of the lack of virtue. The deeper reason of the lack is the loss of virtue education. The utilitarian education, the standard education and the ignorance of self-awareness are the reasons that why the virtue education lost its position. In order to practice temperance we must change our education idea and focus on fostering people’s character and moral sentiments under the background of virtue education. At the same time, integrating the school education, family education and the social education into education path, especially highlight the family education. Last but not the least, we should train the students’ability of analyzing and selecting through more and more practice in order to form a habit.
