Holy Heaven - Maugham Spain Travel

British writer Somerset Maugham be fond of traveling, he has traveled all over the world. He realized that the lack of native culture and tried to escape the shackles of their country of civilization, looking for an ideal spiritual sanctuary. So he travels alone many times, spend a lifetime, walking in the pursuit of a "ideal homeland". In this paper, Maugham’s two Spanish travel notes "The land of the blessed virgin:sketches and impression in Andalusian " and "Variations on a Theme of Spain" as the object of study, depth analysis in Spain, Maugham step off the cloak of Western civilized, in a natural way calling for the return of pure humanity reversion. He regarded Spain as the ideal romantic utopia, in order to reflect on their own cultural shortcomings, complete the definition and beyond of self-identity. The dissertation can be divided into three chapters:The first chapter mainly discusses the image of Spain of Maugham. From three aspects, such as the plain scenery of south Spain, the people and the East-West fusion of Andalusian. Spain has the simple and natural scenery, the most people passionate, living a natural simple life. Meanwhile, Spain contains both Eastern and Western characteristics, which is a rare variety of cultural shrine.The second chapter discusses travel subject Maugham. Firstly, focus on the huge difference of Maugham’s Spain image and the real Spain. Secondly, analysis of the reasons for differences, the reasons why Maugham visit to Spain. On the one hand, because of the physiological disease, Maugham has to leave British, and he does not agree with the social and cultural of evening of Victorian age. He tried to visit those places in Spain which are far away from the industrial civilization and urban civilization, viewed the Spanish as the rescue medicine to resolve British social crisis. On the other hand, Maugham has been influenced of the social collective imagination.The third chapter shows interaction between the travel subject and the exotic image. In the travel notes, Maugham extract outstanding cultural landscape quality, see the Spanish as a romance Utopian. He’s Spain image like a mirror, reflect on their own cultural deficiencies, complete the definition and beyond of self-identity. Ostensibly, he regard Spain as a world which full of romantic different from the Western world, has many good quality. As a matter of fact, he regarded Spain as the ideal romantic utopia.Through the three chapter, Maugham record for Spain, not simply depict, but a purpose built. Its significance lies that design a future prospect ideal homeland against industrial civilization, reconstruct the past habitat, found a new spirit harbor for those who in the crisis of the human spirit.
