It is really hard to avoid the important subject of space during studying painting. This article will discuss this issue by four chapters in two parts. In the first part, there is an introduction of general development of painting space and an analysis of that painting space in ancient Egypt is plane and subjective, in Middle Ages is plane and decorative. For quite a long time from Renaissance to Impressionism, painting space had developed around perspective and deep three-dimensional space. While, in modern times, complanate turns into one of the major characters in painting space field again. Just like the phenomenon of fashion. The second one is the emphasis. In this part, basic on analysis of Les Nabis’ works and comparison with other schools’ works, I conclude that Les Nabis in the late19th century convert pursuing the sense of deep three-dimensional space by their works which are characterized by complanate, subjective and decortive.I have to say this is a huge change in the history of painting space development. Besides, I take advantage of this to elaborate the impact on contemporaneous and later schools and the importance in the history of art development.
