Characteristics Simian Historical Research And Its Implications

Lv Simian (1884-1957), an independent historian, had made great achievement in many historical fields, including General History, Dynastic History and Specialized History. Meanwhile, the thesis tends to inspire its readers and enhance the inheritance and creation in modern historiography through the presentation of development of Lv’s historical studies, which is the reflection of evolvement of Chinese history in modern times.Educated in the old-style private school in his boyhood, Lv Simian strives to learn new theories in the trend of intercultural communications between the east and west. He, transferred from an old-style scholar to a new-style intellectual makes huge contributions to historical research. His dominating accomplishments in historiography include "abundant historical works","systematization of the ancient books in history for the convenience of latter references","summary of historical theories for the guidance of latter location","introduction of western scientific theories to the field of historical research","initiation of new form of historical compilation" and "conclusion of Chinese system culture."Through an analysis on Lv’s achievements, his research features can be summed as "skillfully comprehensive study","emphasis on the unique values of the biographically-written history books","consideration of the economic issue as the basis of historical compilation" and "close combination of historical research and teaching". In regard to the enlightenment of his research,"improvement ourselves","adherence to the dialectical unity of the historical truth and humanistic pragmatism","stresses on the integrity of general comprehension and specialization" and "emphasis on the national and epochal character in the historical research" are included.Lv’s greatness in history dues to his personal efforts and the time he lives. In his studies, the most distinctive uniqueness is the skillfully comprehensive study of history which critically based on the combination of "manuscript notes coming first" and "theoretical presupposition". To sum up, as a guide of the research of modern history, when Lv changes his path in historical studies, he doesn’t make a superficial change but a revolutionary transformation in learning style and inner academic spirit.
