As a kind of movie type or movie theme in the world, youth movie or youth film has been described expressed and studied by many directors or scholars for a long time.China youth film has a relatively late development, compared with other countries or regions. Compared with mature youth film in Hollywood of America, China youth film is not a mainstream of China film, which even has no position in the history of early Chinese film; compared with the "small and pure and fresh" style of the youth movie in Taiwan, mainland China youth movie has not formed its own style yet. In academia, research on Chinese youth movie started relatively late and need to be fulfilled in the future. In the1990s, China youth film appeared a new face in due course, especially in recent years (in2013, mainland China even launched a large number of youth films in one year).Chinese youth movie appear some new changes. Based on the above understanding, the study of mainland youth film since the90s not only has practical significance but also has theoretical value. It is not only beneficial to discover the new development and new change of the Chinese youth movie, to create better youth movie, but also has theory value due to the perspective of cultural studies.In this paper, by watching a large number of youth movies, firstly, the definition of the youth movie is given. And secondly, from the perspective of cultural studies, this paper try to make a research on the motif or elements of Chinese youth film since1990s, including love, growth, rebellion, dream and lost which are analyzed respectively. And the specific outline is given as follows:In the introduction part, the study background and literature review and the definition of youth film are given.In the first chapter, it mainly expresses the love theme in mainland youth film since the90s, including pure love, sex enlightenment, forbidden love (or taste forbidden fruit), and free love. And the expression of love roughly presented from pure love to love consumption;In the second chapter, the growth of youth is mainly described, including the youth during Cultural Revolution, edge youth, campus youth, and urban youth. And it transforms from literary youth to commercial youth roughly;The third chapter analyses the youth of the rebellion in the mainland youth film since the90s, including reaction against patriarchy, rebellion of traditional culture and resistance of the outside world; In the fourth chapter, various dream of youth in mainland youth film is expressed, including personal dream, the mass collective dream and the dream blank of few people. To some extent, the dream theme of mainland youth movie since90s is cruelly presented overall.In the fifth chapter, loss of youth in mainland youth film since the90s is analyzed, including the lack of identity, the lack of personal values, the chaos and confusion of social reality. In this part, the loss in youth film always reflects the social problems and youth confusion in real life.The conclusion part summarizes the achievements and shortcomings of mainland youth film since90s, and writer’s personal opinions are given. For mainland youth film, it has to face a lot of problems such as:type singleness, fuzziness of target audience, lack of moral premise, etc. And how to establish its own style will be an important problem for the Chinese mainland youth movie. What’s more, the reform of review system and the establishment of film classification system will be beneficial to mainland China youth movie to make diverse and creative youth film in the future freely.
