In the21st century, science and technology have developed so rapid and the world markets and the economic globalization have been widening. As a result, people from different societies and cultures become more and more closely related and at the same time people who communicate and work between cultures become more and more frequent. However, intercultural communicative competence is mainly emphasized in college English teaching. It is from1990s that our middle school English teaching began to attach importance to culture input. Up to now, there are few researches which focus on the cultivation of intercultural communicative competence in primary schools, especially in schools of remote regions. English teaching in remote regions is lagging far behind that in cities. As the new standard of English curriculum for primary and secondary schools points out that English teaching should include language skills, language knowledge, learners’attitudes, learning strategies and cultural awareness, cultivating students’intercultural awareness is also one important step in the initial phase of primary school English teaching. Based on this phenomenon, it seems imperative to cultivate and improve students’intercultural communicative competence in remote primary schools. This thesis investigates and analyzes on intercultural communicative competence in the course of English teaching of students and teachers in an insular primary school so as to advise effective strategies for improving intercultural communicative education in remote regions. One interview and two questionnaires are used for the research on students and teachers from Wangjia Town Central Primary School. And it turns out that students’intercultural communicative competence there is generally poor and the causes are many-sided. The causes existing can be summarized as follows:the relatively isolated geographic environment, few educational investment, few teaching resources, the lack of books and multimedia classroom, the inappropriate teaching methods of English teacher, the negligence of the importance of English by students’parents, poor ability of students, a student drain and so on. All of these exist side by side and gives rise to the problems in English teaching of remote regions. At the end of this thesis, the author summaries the results of the research and made a few revelations and a few feasible strategies on improving English language teaching of intercultural communicative competence in remote regions according to the study.
