For many years, phonetic teaching has been a neglected field in TEFL andresearch focused on study of English pronunciation of sixth-grade learners has provedto be insufficient. In this paper, the author samples100students in Grade One as thesubjects of the experiment, carries out the research through three different methods--literature methodology, questionnaire investigation and experiment. Based on the resultof the sixth-grade students’ questionnaire and the teachers’ interview, the author makes adetailed analysis of the problems in phonetic teaching in Grade Six and put forward toan effective English phonetic teaching method, the learned-centered and group–cooperated English phonetic teaching approach. At the beginning of the research, the author makes a survey among200students inGrade Six and interviews25teachers of English in different schools. After taking anoverall view of the statistics, the author finds out the problems in the present phoneticteaching. The main problem is that many of the students has formed an incorrect habitof pronunciation, some of them have problems in pronouncing the sound correctly.Meanwhile, the English teachers are lack of effective methods when teaching Englishphonetics. Under the guide of Communicative language teaching theory and themotivation theory, the author put forward to the learner-centered and group-cooperatedEnglish phonetic teaching approach to help solve the problems in the current phoneticteaching. Aimed at developing the communicative competence of language learners, thisteaching method provides a lot of vivid communication practice to help the learnershave a better understanding of the English pronunciation and intonation, and to arousethe learners’ interest of learning. This mode has its own advantages. By means ofcooperative learning, it can mobilize the learners positive factors to devote all theirefforts to their phonetic learning. Also, it combines phoneme segment andsuprasegmental teaching. This phonetic teaching mode consists of six steps:presentation, group discussion and the teacher’s explanation, imitation, practice ingroups, group communication activity and assessment. The author carried out the teaching mode for4months. It has been proved that thelearner-centered and group-cooperated English phonetic teaching mode is effective to improve the learners’ pronunciation. It is of great use to solve the actual pronunciationproblems for the sixth-grade students. Due to the fact that many complex factors havean effect on pronunciation learning, this mode needs practicing more and improvingbetter.
