It is known to all that English learning includes four parts:listening, speaking, reading and writing. Writing teaching is an indispensable part in English teaching of junior middle school. It aims to practice and consolidate the management of what students have learned; and promote students’integrated language abilities. However, the current situation of junior middle school’s writing teaching is still far from being satisfactory. Students don’t know how to do when they face a writing task and writing teaching is also a difficult task for English teachers.In view of existing problems in writing teaching of junior middle school, the study uses action research approach to conduct experiments among90students from two classes of an ordinary junior middle school in Nanjing, in order to explore whether the process writing approach can improve students’writing ability and whether it has a positive influence on students’writing strategy, writing interests and team cooperation consciousness. The study consists of the following parts:first, discuss the current situation of junior middle school writing teaching through the questionnaire paper; second, look up books and papers, discuss with teachers and professors, finally put forward to use the process writing approach in writing teaching and make up action plans for the research, conduct the first period action, reflect and modify the action plan in the process; third, conduct the second period action, collect material, analyze data.The major findings are presented as follows:first, process writing approach is more effective than product writing approach in developing students’writing interests, especially in pre-writing step; second, compared with product writing approach, process writing approach can improve students’writing strategy and cultivate good writing habits; third, process writing approach serves better than product writing approach to build up students’self-study ability and cooperation ability. Though process writing approach is an effective teaching method under present real situation, English teachers should change and modify their procedures more effectively according to the real condition.
