Nowadays, the New Curriculum Standard has made high requirements about middle school students’English reading ability, but set against this backdrop is the unsatisfactory reading status. Therefore, the present author concludes that it is urgent that we should help students improve their English reading ability.This study is based on the reading strategy, reading process, reading ability and extracurricular reading theories. And then, it theoretically expounds their enlightening and guiding functions on extracurricular reading. In the meanwhile, questionnaire survey, natural experimental method, data analysis, observation and interview method are also adopted in the research.The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between English extracurricular reading and the high school students’reading competence development. After the analysis of the status quo of the students’extracurricular reading investigated by means of the questionnaire survey and interview, the experiment was carried out and found out:(1) Carrying out after-class reading can increase the amount of students’extracurricular reading and completion rates. At the same time, it is beneficial to their reading ability.(2) A large amount of English extracurricular reading is relevant to high school students’reading ability.All in all, it is hoped that this paper will be conducive to arouse more peers to do further study on the subject. In this way, it can be of some service to more researchers.
