Reading is described as a receptive language process. It is a psycholinguistic process in which it starts with linguistic surface representation enclosed by a writer and ends with meaning constructed by the reader. Among the four abilities of listening, speaking, reading and writing, reading always deserves educators’great attention. How to quickly improve learners’reading ability in a short time has become the primary focus in English teaching. Till now, many studies have shown that the scheme theory has brought great advantages to English teaching, but the relevant study of its application to junior high school English classroom is still lacking.This article, based on the scheme theory, tries to explore how to improve the English reading ability of junior high school students. It aims to solve four problems:1. What is scheme theory?2. How to apply the scheme theory to English text reading?3. Whether grade eight and grade nine students can improve their English reading ability by using the method of the scheme theory?4. What are the advantages of using the scheme theory in English reading teaching?In order to pratise the feasibility of the scheme theory and get a more accurate conclusion, the author divided the students into two parts:experimental class and controlled class. The experimental class pratised scheme reading teaching method, while the students in the controlled class still adopted the traditional method which emphasizes vocabulary and grammar. All of them take two English tests at the end of the semester. Through analyzing the collected data of the tests, the author has reached the following conclusions:first, the reading scores of the experimental class students are higher than those of the controlled class students; second, the students in the experimental class are more interested in reading than those in the controlled class, which further proves that the application of the scheme theory to the leaning of English reading can improve students’ interest in reading; third, the scheme theory plays a positive role in promoting English learners’reading ability in junior high school. What’s more, the application of the scheme theory has an important guiding role to enhance the traditional teaching of English reading comprehension.
