A Social Work Intervention Research On Aged Cure Needs Of Lonely Seniors

With the accelerated pace of the aging of the Chinese population, family structure has transformed and there are raising numbers of empty nesters. In addition, the aging population lags behind economic growth in our country and the social security system has yet to be improved. Therefore, the aging problems seem very urgent and important than ever before. The key to solve the aging problems is to meet the needs of elderly groups. Among them all, older singletons are most vulnerable group which required more caring and love. Lonely seniors face demands from physical to mental care in every aspect of their life. Social Work adopt the professional concept of "helping people to help themselves" together with its own theoretical system and professional approach providing research of lonely olders’needs. The purpose of my thesis is to expand the field of social work service, solve the problems of old people effectually, enhance the quality of life of old persons, advance the specialization of pension services and to promote the localization of geriatric social work.My thesis proceeds form the perspective of social work. In the earlier project stage, the writer evaluated the demands of lonely elders who are supported by Hubei Hospice Care Service based on use of literature research method, semi-structured interview and participant observation. Study results indicate that service objects have the needs of goods and materials, security, love and care, self esteem. After comprehensive analysis of the three sides needs of the lonely elders, writer planed and carried out directed activities based on the Maslow’ s Hierarchy of Need Theory and Social Reconstruction Theory. The activity names are "happy shopping","mid-autumn forgather","happy-together handwork" respectively. Through the assessment of project activities, project in my thesis achieved positive results. The elders actively participate in the activities, get happiness, self-confidence and change for the better.Services for lonely seniors cannot be separated from government, the whole society and social workers. It has to be changed from "service orientation" to "demands orientation". With the help of local government, social groups and volunteers, post increase and expanded publicity of social work, the service would be provided for the elder in need, which also enhance their abilities for self-care and self-development. As we all hope the elder could live a stable and fulfilling life on their old ages.
