As we know, speaking is greatly emphasized as one of the most important skills for EFL students. The ultimate goal of language learning is to communicate with others with accuracy and fluency. However, the author finds that many students are afraid of speaking, and they show little interest in speaking communication. As a result, there is a common phenomenon that students’ communicative competence, especially the oral communicative ability is inferior. In this dissertation, the author analyzed the current situation of oral English learning and teaching in Junior high schools and the main reasons for it. Facing the problem, the author applied a new teaching method—Cooperative Learning.The emphasis of the dissertation is on how to apply Cooperative Learning to oral English classroom teaching to improve students’ oral ability in junior high school. The author has conducted a one-year experiment, in which students of junior two took part. Through the analysis of the pre-test, post-test, the questionnaires and the interview, it proved three hypotheses:(1) Cooperative Learning helps to develop junior high school students’ oral ability.(2) Cooperative Learning enhances junior high school students’ interest and confidence in oral English learning.(3) Cooperative Learning contributes to facilitate junior high school students’ real participation and positive feelings in oral English learning. So the application of CL in oral English class is practical and effective in junior high schools.
