Textbooks play an indispensible role in English language teaching and learningas they are the main resources for students and teachers. Textbook evaluationcontributes to teachers’ understanding of the textbooks and facilitates further adaptionof the textbooks as well. Much has been written on the model or guidelines fortextbook evaluation. From the author’s point of view, the most appropriate evaluationmodel for one particular textbook should be developed by the evaluators according tothe reality.Since the second round curriculum development, New Century English andOxford English for senior high school have become two of the most widely usedtextbooks in Shanghai. Nonetheless, there are few researches concerning thecomparison of them from students’ perspective. So the present study may besomehow meaningful to the adoption and adaption of the two sets of textbooks.This paper consists of five chapters: Chapter one introduces the significance ofthe study, research questions and the thesis structure. Chapter two is a literaturereview concerning the definition and role of textbook, the development of Englishtextbooks in China and the textbook evaluation models. Chapter three is an internalevaluation from the author’s perspective. Chapter four is an external evaluation of thetwo textbooks including a questionnaire and an interview. The evaluation is fromstudents’ perspective. Chapter five draws a conclusion of the findings, proposessuggestions and points out limitations of the study.
