The Application Of Phonics To Primary English Teaching For Lower-grade Students

National English Curriculum Standards was modified by the elementary education research center of National Education Ministry in2011. It refines the course target and stresses that learning English should foster students the preliminary comprehensive language level. It should promote students’mental development and improve their comprehensive humanistic literacy through learning English. It specifically refines the teaching goals, especially on the language knowledge aspect. It requires that students in lower-grade of primary school should read and write26letters correctly, understand simple spelling rules, know clearly that they should learn vocabulary according to the word sounds, forms and meanings. In order to achieve the course standard requirement in actual teaching and solve students’troubles in English learning, the author will apply the literature reviewing and experimental demonstration method to discuss the effective application of phonics in lower-grade in primary school English teaching.This paper uses the pre-test, post-test, questionnaires and an interview method to explore the different effects between phonics method and traditional vocabulary learning method. The subjects were74students in grade two in a primary school in Anshan. Two parallel classes were selected as the experimental group and control group. The whole experiment is covering a semester period. The results show that:1. Students in the experimental group have a better performance than the control group on word spelling and memory aspect.2. Students’interest and confidence in learning English have been raised and their pressure of reciting words has been reduced.The experiment proves that phonics method can effectively train students’interest in English learning. Meanwhile, students can learn more methods in how to learn English vocabulary which lay the good foundation for future English learning.The teaching enlightenment of this research is:in the primary school English teaching to lower-grade, teachers should neither blindly teach more language knowledge to make students feel more pressure, nor use the traditional vocabulary learning method just purely for raising students’interest. Teachers should respect students’psychological development and cognitive development, use phonics method to teach students learn English words, effectively improve students’performance, reduce their pressure, meet students’thirst for knowledge and cultivate the ability of summing up rules of English language.
