Vocabulary is one of the important factors for language learning, and it is the important constructive material of a language. Without words, there would be no language. To learn a foreign language, the key is to master a large number of related words of the purpose language. Vocabulary teaching occupies an important position in foreign language learning. However, in senior middle school English teaching in China, vocabulary teaching has always been in a relatively backward state, which puzzles both students and teachers in their teaching and learning for a long time. What’s worse, with the start and the thorough development of the new curriculum reform, the standard of the new curriculum in English vocabulary teaching for senior middle school has a higher requirement, which is mainly embodied in two aspects. First, the new standard demands students to master significantly more words than before in terms of words quantity. It’s clearly written that before graduating from high school the quantity of the words students need to master has increased from the original2000commonly used words to about3300words and400-500idioms or fixed collocations. Second, the new standard pays more attention to students’words using and stresses learning vocabulary from the perspective of using. All in all, the requirement of the standard is a bigger task for senior middle school students and it is also a serious test put forward for teachers. How to get rid of the problems existing in the traditional teaching and find out the corresponding solutions becomes very necessary and urgent. In order to respond to the education reform and adapt to the need of modern quality education, teachers must update their teaching ideas and improve their education methods and teaching means, successfully transferring their teaching model from the traditional teacher-centered class mode into student-centered class mode. In class teaching, teachers should realize that students should be in an active status, and they should mobilize the enthusiasm and initiative of students and pay attention to all aspects of students’development so that students can really become the protagonist of the class. Constructivism is a scientific concept rising from the1980s. It advocates the idea of student-centered and it emphasizes that learning is the active construction of knowledge significance. Besides, it argues that the teacher is a powerful helper and promoter for students in the process of meaning construction and the ideas and the current quality education should echo each other at a distance. In a word, it has important significance to the current education reform and worth an in-depth study.Under the instruction of the constructivist theory, this paper combines with the reality to talk about senior middle school English vocabulary teaching from the perspective of constructivist theory.
