As we all know, being an important component of English learning, English writing can best reflect students’ proficiency. So it takes a significant proportion in a variety of English tests, including the NEMT. However, the statistics show that writing is still a weak aspect in the present high schools’ English learning and teaching. How to teach English writing effectively has become an urgent task in the research of English teaching.In this paper, the author used The Model-imitation Approach in the teaching of writing for Grade-12students. The purpose was to test the effects of Model-imitation Approach for Grade-12students’ writing by imitating two aspects:lexical chunks and macro-structure of the discourses. The following research questions were addressed in the present study:1Can students use the lexical chunks and the structure of the models properly after taking the training of the Model-imitation Approach?2Can the Model-imitation Approach improve the scores of writing for Grade12students?3Can the Model-imitation Approach help increase students’ interest in writing in a long run?To answer the research questions, the author did an experiment in a senior high middle school in Pinggu District of Beijing. Compared with the control class, the author analyzed the effect of the Model-imitation Approach on the teaching of English writing. The author analyzed the data from the questionnaire and the pretest and the post-test using SPSS18.0, and drew the conclusion that the Model-imitation Approach in English writing class could help students finish an article meeting the requirements easily, then finally improve students’writing scores and interest in writing with the sufficient input.Although the limitations of the study were analyzed in the last part of the paper, the results of the research provided valuable references for English writing theory and offered some recommendations for the further research in the future. It is hoped that this thesis will help the teachers in Senior High School have a better understanding of the Model-imitation Approach and apply this approach to conduct English writing teaching practice, then finally promote students writing proficiency.
