| The subject of this article is Kuicheng Qiao, who is one of calligraphy and painting collectors of the early Yuan Dynasty. As there were not enough formal historical and local Chronicle records, Kuicheng Qiao in terms of name and career was always considered as one person with Da Qiao, who was a painter of the same period. This article, for the first time, clearly distinguished these two persons by literature collection, stone steles and historical materials related to literature of the Yuan Dynasty. The Scope of Kuicheng Qiao’s collection of painting and calligraphy was revivificated by thoroughly research of all literature and collection of stamps on the calligraphy and painting works handed down from ancient times. It was also concluded that Kuicheng Qiao’s idea and taste on painting and calligraphy was mainly inherited from Tang and Song Dynasty. The origin of his idea and taste was due to his strictly observing of recording and literacy discipline from Tang and Song Dynasty. However, Kuicheng Qiao was not a simple individual. He was very active in the art field of Hangzhou area and interacted intensely with other civilian officials and artists, collectors by making friends and appreciation activities in the early Yuan Dynasty. It was through Kuicheng Qiao and the artist’s interaction that the private collection activities were revivificated for the early years of the Yuan dynasty. |
