St. John’s University in Shanghai was started as one of missionary universitiesby the Episcopal Church in the USA in1879. It disappeared in1952because of therestructuring of university and college in China. It existed73years in China anddeveloped into a famous university called “Harvard (University) in the orient”. Therapid development of the university owed to the president of the university and itsteacher community. This paper analyses the teacher cohort from the following aspects:that is, the forming sources、educational conditions、the roles in social and educationalfields and the characteristics. The researches on teacher cohort intend to understandthe teacher cohort and offer some lessons for today’s teacher development inuniversity.This article consists of five main chapters and the introduction and theconclusion.The introduction illustrates the core concepts of this paper, the questions ofresearch, the research significance, the related literature review, the research methodand the innovation points.The first chapter analyses the courses of teacher cohort. Firstly, it introducesthe historical background and the important historical figure to the universitydevelopment. Secondly, it introduces the forming process about teacher cohort fromthree periods in detail: start-up stage,period of expansion and nonstationary phase.The second chapter discusses the educational conditions. This part analyses someof teachers’ educational conditions and their influence factor.The third chapter analyzes the role of education about the teacher cohort ofSt.John’s University in Shanghai. Firstly, analyses the role of expert in teachingincluding their opening subjects and teaching methods. Secondly, analyses the role ofsubject creator and developomenter. And then, analyses the role of academicresearcher. At last, analyses the role of copartner and communicator betweendifferent universities even and foreign universities.The forth chapter analyzes the social role about the teacher cohort of St. John’sUniversity in Shanghai. Firstly, analyses the role of the moral models. This part introduces how teachers love and help their students, and how they cultivate studentsform good habits of civilization and how they explore Science and truth continuously.Secondly, analyses the role of service society. It elaborates how teachers serve thesociety in different periods such as start-up stage、the Anti-Japanese War period、theperiods before and after the People’s Republic of China. And then, analyses the roleof middle class by researching the teachers’daily life including eating,wearing, living,and transpertations.The fifth chapter summarizes the characteristic about the teacher cohort ofSt.John’s University in Shanghai.The above is the main contents of this thesis. It can set up a mirror for theuniversity faculty and let them take the blame to the country and the society. Takehistory as a mirror, they will find out the shortness about the university teachers incontemporary era. In the end, it can offer a new direction to the teachers and theuniversity.
