Questioning is the most common teaching method in English classroom.It is an importantmedium to stimulate the students’ learning interest and activate their thinking.It is also a veryimportant channel for teachers and students to communicate and intercourse.So studying andanalyzing the characteristics of questioning is of great significance to English teaching inclassroom.On the basis of analyzing the research findings of classroom questioning at home andabroad,by taking my working place(Yantai Middle School)as an example,I do the research onthe base of classroom observation of6English teachers and the survey of180students.Theaim is to further study the characteristics of teachers’questioning and students’ feedback aboutthem.All of these are supposed to contribute to making some suggestions on improvingteachers’questioning quality in classroom teaching.The research focus on the following aspects:1)Teachers’questioning characteristics in class:types of questioning,formulations ofquestioning,waiting time,feedback to students’answers.2)students’feedback to classroom questioning.The result of the research shows that the number of closed questions is much larger thanthat of the open questions,the formulations of questioning is not scientific,the waiting time isrelative proper,some teachers’ positive feedback is too simple and ambiguous.Based on the findings,the author puts forward the following suggestions to improveteachers’ classroom questioning:(1)More open questions should be asked.(2)Teachers shouldcare for every student and add more formulations of questioning.(3)Teachers should crate agood atmosphere and hold well the waiting time.(4) Positive feedback should be moredetailed and concrete.
