A Research On Liu Xianxin’s Hanzhi Yuyi

Liu Xianxin (1896-1932), a modern scholar of Sichuan, studied personally under Zhang Xuecheng. Due to the influence of Zhang, Liu saw bibliography as the base of study and wrote his theological works, such as Xu Jiaochou Tongyi, Jiaochou Shulin and Bibliography. On account of regarding Qilue as the "Tong"(which means unity) of bibliography, Liu attached importance to Hanshu Yiwenzhi (or Hanzhi for short). In his Xu Jiaochou Tongyi, there is an article called Hanzhi Yuyiin which Liu analyzed the classification of Hanzhi. And this paper studies on this field.In this paper, the introduction part introduces Liu’s short life and his great academic achievements. Next, summarizes the introduce and research about Liu’s bibliographical theory combined with the publication of his works. The first part introduces Liu’s research method called "Mingtong Zhilei"(to divide the academics to history and philosophycorrectlyand have them governed by Six Classics), and then studies his claim about using the cataloguing system of Qilue to reform the Four-Branch Classification and the feasibility of exploit Hanzhi to ascertain the cataloguing system of Qilue. This paper uses all of these as the background of Liu’s research on Hanzhi. The second part analyzes Liu’s research on the classification of Hanzhi, explains that as Liu emphasized the genre, the classification of Hanzhi was reinterpreted. And then discusses Liu’s responses of forefathers’criticism on it. The third part analyzes Liu’s emphasis on the Tong of Qilue and points out Liu thought highly of the spirit of Qilue and his argument was based on the original text. And the paper’s epilogue combines Hanzhi Yuyi with Zhang Xuecheng’s thoughts, summarizes that as Liu valued genre and Qilue when he researched Hanzhi, hist houghts was different from Zhang. At last, according to the academic knows little about the publication of Liu’s works before1949, the paper attach a table and a textual research about this gap.
