Smart antenna has the following abilities: spatial reuse increase, thetransmission reliability enhancement, transmission range extension and/or thepower consumption saving. If these abilities can be effective used, they cangreatly enhance the network capacity, node working time, the networkconnectivity and security. However due to some unique characteristics ofwireless network with smart antenna, traditional Medium Access Control(MAC) protocols fail to exploit these potential. To that end, people havedesigned a lot of MAC protocols to harness these potential in the past fewyears. In this paper, we survey the literature on MAC protocols proposed forwireless networks with smart antennas. We discuss the main smartantenna-related challenges facing the medium access control in wirelessnetworks. According to the mode of operation to these challenges, we presenttaxonomy of the MAC protocols proposed in these literatures. Combiningsmart antenna technology, dual-channel directional virtual carrier sensing andthe characteristics of the WMN backbone, this paper propose a new MACprotocol based on CSMA/CA. This MAC mechanism compete directionaldata channel access rights with exchanging omni-directional RTS/CTS incontrol channel. This protocol avoids the traditional problems with smartantenna and improves the performance of the whole network withDual-channel directional virtual carrier sensing. The OPNET simulationresults show that the throughput and delay performance will be significantlyimproved via our method compared with other protocols. |
