Visual tracking as the core of the visual information processing technology, playing a more and more important role in the fields of military, security, industrial and medical. Comparing with gray image, color image contain more sensitive information which make the color target tracking has wider application foreground and great reserch significance.This paper analyzed two of the most representative and advancing tracking algorithm: MS and particle filter algorithm. At the same time, have the further study of the directional-edge-based employing multiple candidate-location generation tracking algorithm according to the design requirements of the system, then extended it to the RGB color space. Described its theory in detail and completed the color target system based on FPGA.The system takes Xilinx Spartan-3E series XC3S500E-PQ208chips as the core and designed the related hardware circuit of image acquisition, image display and motor drive. Though the embedded PicoBlaze soft core microprocessor of FPGA, it has achieved the image acquisition and display with assembly language. Using VHDL language to realized the edge feature extraction of color object. With the edge feature, it completed the task of color target tracking though the MCR algorithm. The results show that the algorithm has strong anti-interference ability and small amount of calculation needed. It is also easy to realize in hardware and has high efficiency and accuracy in tracking. It can absolutely meet the requirements of the subject.
