Sustainable land use is the core issue of urban agricultural development. The essence of urban agriculture, a pattern of modern agriculture, is to realize the harmonious development of agricultural production and urban sustainable development as well as that of man and nature. The sustainable development of urban agriculture is based on sustainable land use.With the development of the society and civilization, land resources for urban agriculture are facing increasing pressure. The shortage of urban land supply leads to a series of problems, such as excessive land development, unreasonable land utilization, resulting in land quality degradation and ecological environment damage which further aggravated the contradiction between supply and demand in urban agricultural land resources. Therefore, to promote the sustainable development of the society, it is necessary to evaluate the sustainable land use level of urban agriculture and identify the constraining factors. Then policy suggestions can be put forward for the construction of "Two-oriented society" to promote urban sustainable utilization of agricultural land and land space layout.Realizing the fact that sustainable land use is the key to urban agricultural development, the paper analyzes the current land use level of urban circle cities and decomposes the factors which influence sustainable urban agriculture land use from the perspective of sustainable development. Based on the analysis, we establish the evaluation index system of sustainable urban agricultural land use, then build the evaluation model and constraining factor diagnosis model in order to measure urban agricultural land use level of Wuhan Metropolitan areas and the constraining degree of each index, therefore to put forward preliminary arrangement of urban agricultural land use.Research results show that:(1) From2003to2008, the sustainable urban agricultural land use level of Wuhan Metropolitan areas is low as a whole, excerpt that of Wuhan city is relatively higher than others in the circle (reaching above0.5). In the meanwhile, both the quantity and degree of constraining factors are gradually declining, which means sustainable use level tends to rise.(2) The regional crosswise comparison, the sustainable utilization level of the highest is in wuhan, comprehensive level of sustainable value reached0.545, followed by qianjiang, comprehensive level of sustainable value of0.511; Sustainable level is the worst city in xiaogan, the comprehensive evaluation value of only0.375; Huangshi, ezhou and xiantao city at medium to sustainable levels, the comprehensive evaluation value between0.4to0.5.(3) The main constraints of sustainable land utilization are land reclamation rate C12, agricultural GDP water consumption per ten thousand C15, the index of land utilization structure diversity C21, controlled water loss and soil erosion area C25, the contribution rate of scientific and technological progress C34, high and new technology agricultural application level C36, annual net income of farmers C44, et cetera. The constraints are declining and some tend to weaken gradually.(4) Some suggestions are put forward to increase the sustainable urban agricultural land use level. The plan of urban agricultural land use should be developed and the regulation institution of urban agricultural land needs to be implemented in the first place. Then measures should be taken to strengthen the land circulation mechanism and consolidate agricultural land informatization construction. Last but not least, we should spare no effort to promote new agricultural technologies and improve technological innovation of urban agricultural land conservation.
